Nominees Announced in Four Categories for 22nd Annual IDA Awards

LOS ANGELES, October 24, 2006 — The International Documentary Association (IDA) has announced finalists in four categories for the 22nd Annual IDA Distinguished Documentary Achievement Awards. The nominees are in the Continuing and Limited series categories, as well as those competing for the IDA/ABCNews VideoSource and Pare Lorentz awards. The winners will be feted here at the IDA Awards Benefit Gala on December 8, 2006, at the Directors Guild of America Theatre.

“All of these documentaries tell compelling stories about an important subject in a memorable way,” says IDA President diane estelle Vicari. “These filmmakers have earned the admiration of their peers for setting the contemporary standard for excellence in nonfiction filmmaking.”

The nominees in the Continuing Series category (four individual programs that best represent the series) are AMERICAN EXPERIENCE (PBS), AMERICAN MASTERS (PBS), THE FIRST 48 (A&E), MEERKAT MANOR (Animal Planet), and WIDE ANGLE (Thirteen/WNET New York).

Nominees in the Limited Series category (series of episodes with specific continuing theme) are CHINA RISES (CBC), THE DRUG YEARS (VH1), OFF TO WAR (Discovery Times Channel), TRANSGENERATION (Sundance Channel), and RX FOR SURVIVAL: A GLOBAL HEALTH CHALLENGE (PBS).

The IDA will also present the ABCNews VideoSource Award to the documentary filmmaker(s) whose work best utilizes television news footage as an integral component of the work. The seven nominated films are THE DRUG YEARS, JONESTOWN: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PEOPLES TEMPLE, ONCE IN A LIFETIME, REPORTER ZERO, THEY CHOSE CHINA, TOOTS, and THE TRIALS OF DARRYL HUNT.

The Pare Lorentz Award will be presented to the filmmaker whose documentary best represents the activist spirit and lyrical vision of Pare Lorentz, who was the first recipient of an IDA Career Achievement Award. The eight nominees are BLACK GOLD, THE BLOOD OF YINGZHOU DISTRICT, CHINA RISES, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, HEAVEN‘S HERDS–NGUNI CATTLE, NGUNI PEOPLE; MY COUNTRY, MY COUNTRY; RADIO GRITO, and RX FOR SURVIVAL: A GLOBAL HEALTH CHALLENGE.

The IDA Awards selection process began with peer group juries who viewed all submissions to select nominees in each category for final review by a blue-ribbon panel. The nominees in the Feature and Short categories will be announced at a later date.

Eastman Kodak Company has sponsored the IDA Distinguished Documentary Achievement Awards Gala since its inception in 1984. The IDA Awards major sponsor is Netflix and the presenting sponsor is ABCNews VideoSource.
