MK12 FINDS LOVE IN FLYING KITES
March 7, 2008 - New York, NY –- The multi-faceted design team, MK12, have found themselves in a position to grace the silver screen with their clever animated styling. At the request of director Marc Forster, they have been asked to create the title sequence for the The Kite Runner, which was recently nominated for a 2007 Academy Award (Original Score). The sequence is rich with layers of calligraphic Arabic script and forms a deep, abstracted vision of line and form. Accompanied by he score created by Alberto Iglesias, the opening sequence is quite indicative of the rich, textured culture and heritage of Afghanistan.
This lush piece was crafted mostly in After Effects and Maya, with a pre-production process that was quite intricate as MK12 utilized materials directly from the film, such as kite material and Arabic money. This process eventually led Forster and MK12 to find that the Arabic script animation worked best for helping to set the tone for the film.
It is no secret that MK12 and Forster first began working together on the feature film Stranger Than Fiction (2006), in which the Kansas City-based studio created both the title sequence and graphical interface visual effecting of Harold Crick, played by Will Ferrell. Having relished the working relationship’s chemistry on both Stranger Than Fiction and Kite Runner, Forster has asked MK12 to participate in his current project, a James bond film, Quantum of Solace, which is currently in production.
