TV Globo Selects Cine-tal Systems’ Cinemage for “Maysa Bio-Pic
INDIANAPOLIS— Cine-tal Systems recently supplied TV Globo, Brazil’s largest television network, with two of its Cinemage LCD display systems and one of its eL1000 image processors for use in the production of Maysa, a mini-series about famed bossa nova singer Maysa Matarazzo. The mini-series is set to premiere on TV Globo in January with an international theatrical release to follow.
The Cinemage displays and eL1000 image processor are being used as part of a unique “tapeless workflow designed for the production by cinematographer Affonso Beato (Nights in Rodanthe, Love in the Time of Cholera) in concert with TV Globo engineers. The series is being shot with the Arriflex D-21 “film style digital camera with the output recorded raw to a Sony SW-1 deck. The Cinemage displays are being used to monitor the camera feed and, in tandem with IRIDAS’s SpeedGrade OnSet software, to create initial looks. Those looks will be retained and serve as the basis for the show’s final look as it proceeds through post production.
“The combination of the Cinemage monitor and IRIDAS software is fantastic, said Celso Araujo, Manager of Engineering Operations for TV Globo in Rio de Janeiro. “We were all amazed at the magnificent results.
The ability to review footage on the set in a state relatively close to its final form is a huge advantage, Araujo added. “It provides total confidence to the entire production team—the director, cinematographer, costume and set designers, and art director, he observed.
Maysa pioneered the bossa nova style of music and was one of Brazil’s most popular performers from the 1940s through her death in a car accident in 1977. Cinemage and SpeedGrade provided Beato with the creative tools to help capture the long arc of the singer’s career by creating different looks to suggest different periods of time.
“The flexibility and handling of the monitor—and the possibilities it provides—surprised us all, said Araujo.
Post work will be conducted at TV Globo’s studios in Rio de Janeiro on Avid Media Composer and Autodesk Smoke platforms. Final color grading will be done via FilmLight’s Baselight.
