da Vinci’s Splice Puts New Nonlinear Face on da Vinci 2K Color Enhancement Systems

At NAB2006, da Vinci Systems unveiled Splice—a new product that creates a “virtual telecine” for the da Vinci 2K and da Vinci 2K Plus, the industry’s leading color enhancement systems, giving users the real-time benefits of traditional telecine control (pan, tilt, zoom, and rotate) in a nonlinear workflow. Splice blends key technologies from da Vinci’s Resolve DI Mastering Suite, including the new Transformer engine, to allow new and existing da Vinci 2K/2K Plus users to expand and leverage their equipment investment.

“Splice gives 2K colorists the benefits of a nonlinear workflow and revitalizes their existing investment, ensuring they can continue using their 2K system for many years to come,” said Jim Mackrell, senior product manager at da Vinci. “It is the ideal solution for colorists who want nonlinear access to material and also need to control the devices commonly found in the telecine suite. Splice offers the best of both worlds and promotes an environment conducive to creativity. And, when they’re ready, it’s an easy move to our Resolve DI Mastering Suite.”

Powered by da Vinci’s exclusive Transformer image processing accelerator, which provides real-time sizing and rotation, Splice allows colorists to conform, transform, grade, arrange, and deliver images in any order, in real time, and at unsurpassed quality. Operationally, Splice presents itself as a new device on the 2K control panel and provides operators with the types of controls one would normally only associate with a telecine environment.

Splice offers compatibility with other da Vinci technologies, including local and SAN interfaces to both ADIC- and SGI CXFS-based storage networks. Now, with previously stored material, like 2K scans, colorists have instant access to all material, in any order, and can “splice” together images in the exact presentation order required. From there they can grade in context, eliminating the guesswork and constant shuttling and reel-changing required in a linear tape-to-tape or telecine-based workflow. Material can be subsequently sorted in source order and played out for deliverables. This gives colorists the power to match color looks visually from scene to scene. Because there is no time waiting for film or tape to shuttle, clients will experience an unbroken creative flow in the session. Facilities can better optimize colorists’ time and produce more effective results for clients.
