Camcorder Blast from Panasonic

Panasonic press conference at NAB 2008Panasonic introduced a veritable treasure trove of new camcorders at its press conference at Bally’s this afternoon.

The big ones: Two new Varicam models, a new handheld P2 HD model, and a similarly sized AVCHD model.

The Varicams, AJ-HPX3700 and AJ-HPX2700, are 2/3in. 3CCD models that feature 10-bit 4:2:2 AVC-Intra recording, HD-SDI output of 23.98PsF/24PsF, and a multi-gamma function that includes Film-Rec for the vaunted Varicam look.

The 3700 offers full 1920×1080 capture via three 2.2Mpixel CCDs and 4:4:4 dual-link RGB output. The 2700 has three 2/3in. 1Mpixel CCDs.

Both have five P2 slots for up to 200 minutes of 100Mbps recording if you’re using the just-announced 64GB P2 cards. They also feature chromatic aberration compensation technology (CAC), and both do 60Hz and 50Hz recording.

Panasonic AG-HMC150Introduced under the brand-new banner of AVCCAM, the handheld AG-HMC150 has a similar form factor to the popular DVX100/200 series. But this new camera records high-definition MPEG-4 files to SDHC cards in bit rates up to an average of 21Mbps, the highest quality yet for an AVCHD camcorder. (That’s PH mode, which involves full-pixel 1920×1080 recording.) The HMC150 has three 1/3in. CCDs and a fixed 13X Leica Dicomar lens; the camcorder will be available in the fall for “under $4,500.” On a related note, 32GB SDHC cards ship in June.

Panasonic AG-HPX170The AG-HPX170 is a 4.2lb. unit that records resolutions up to 1080p to two P2 slots. It’s got a fixed 13X Leica Dicomar lens and new 16:9 3CCDs that facilitate recording of 20 different SD and HD formats. The HPX170 offers a 20-step frame rate selection in 720p mode for variable-speed shooting in the 12fps to 60fps range. The HPX170 will be available in the fall; no price was announced.

Finally, to help allay the fears of video producers who notice that new laptops no longer include PCMCIA slots–the form factor of the P2 card–Panasonic has announced a five-slot ExpressCard drive. The AJ-PCD35 accepts five P2 cards and inputs them via newer Express/34 slots.
