At NAB 2009, a popular topic was convergence. A good example of this were the new Canon 5D MKII still/video cameras. But as good as these cameras are, the form factor leaves something to be desired. We stopped by the Redrock Micro booth to check out its highly configurable DSLR shooting rigs, designed to eliminate some of the shooting and handling issues associated with these DSLR cameras, which are designed primarily for photography.

CoreMelt recently released its CoreMelt Complete V2 plugin package for editors, and it was showing it off at NAB. CoreMelt is also offering its ImageFlow package for quick and painless photo and video montage creation.

For NAB 2009, Zylight launched its new full-size professional LED lighting fixtures. Previously it offered small on- and off-camera solutions, now it is transitioning into larger, fully adjustable fixtures.

We’ve covered the View Factor Studios Inclino remote follow focus unit in the past, and at NAB 2009 we learned that Viewfactor is shipping the units out to reservation holders. Curt from Viewfactor spent some time with us, showing how the system operates and demonstrating its features.

Letus was at the B&H booth at NAB, showing its 2/3in. and 1/2in. pro adapter mounts, as well as the Ultimate and its rod system. Philip Bloom walked us through the key updates to the system and spoke from his experience as a Letus user.

At NAB, Focus Enhancements was showing its FS5 direct-to-edit recorder as well as an archiving solution for solid-state shops.

Redrock Micro had a great lineup of new products at NAB 2009, including the new M2 Encore, its LiveLens mount for Canon EF lenses, the Micro FollowFocus v2, and all sorts of baseplate and rod accessories to simplify shooting with various camera configurations.

Near the Air Sea Land Productions booth at NAB was a company called uniQoptics that was showing off its new line of PL lenses. These hefty cinema lenses have been designed for digital cinema cameras. It remains to be seen if they perform well in third-party testing, but based on what we saw at the show, color us impressed.

Prior to day one at NAB, there was a ton of preshow buzz about AJA’s new Ki Pro unit, a unique solid-state hard disk capture device that also serves as an I/O box for camcorders of all flavors and formats. The online community was also buzzing about the Io Express, the younger sibling of the Io HD ProRes device that AJA came out with some time ago. So we got the low-down on both products at the AJA booth, check it out.
