10 Years of BOXX

08boxx1.jpgFounded in Austin in 1998, BOXX Technologies is using this Siggraph to celebrate its 10th anniversary with a number of prize contests, giveaways, and special edition hot-rodded workstations, to name just some of the reasons why the booth seems to have a sense of excitement.

The company holds a special place in the hearts and minds of those creatives who spend their days in the trenches creating the effects seen in many top feature films and television commercials, says Francois Wolf, director of marketing at BOXX. “A lot of companies have fallen off the cliff,” says Wolf. “We haven’t, because we don’t try to offer everything, but choose to do a few things very well.”

Some of that take it to the max thinking can be seen in BOXX’s latest product introduction, debuting at the show: vizBOXX. Featuring a dense mix of five, top-of-the-line NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 graphics boards and quad-core Intel Xeon processors, the device is spec’d for virtual reality applications, as well as high-end design.

Other heavy metal products in the busy booth include RealityServer 2.2, a large-scale visualization server system running mental images’ software; redBOXX, claimed as the first solution that allows viewing of 4K footage (shot with the RED ONE digital camera) to play out at full 2K res in real time; and the 3DBOXX 8450 Special Edition workstation, a liquid cooled dynamo which features “unlocked” Intel Xeon CPUs that—with Intel’s blessings—runs some 20%-30% faster than systems stocked with similar processors.
