It was announced that Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American distribution rights to Carlos Cuarón’s film Rudo y Cursi. The film has become a phenomenon in Mexico and in only 3 weeks has established itself as one of the top 5 box office grossing films of all times in Mexico and the biggest Mexican film to open in Argentina (over Y tu mamá también, Amorres Perros and Pan’s Labyrinth). Its soundtrack has also skyrocketed to number 1 on the charts, including the single and music video, a wonderful solo by Gael García Bernal singing a norteño cover of Cheap Trick’s “I want you to want me” that has spawned countless homages and imitations on TV and on the internet. The film will have its US premiere screening at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival later this month. more

Up and Coming Indie Film Composer Joachim Horsley Hits Sundance with Four Films

Louisiana-made Films Featured at Sundance Film Festival

Three films shot in Louisiana will be featured at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah during the January 15-25 event. “I Love You Philip Morris,” starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, will premier among the festival’s main selections. “The Killing Room,” with Timothy Hutton and Chloe Sevigny, will be part of the ‘Park City at Midnight’ offerings. Louisiana native Steven Soderbergh’s “Sex, Lies and Videotape” will be presented in the ‘From the Collection’ section to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its premier at Sundance. In addition, Louisiana-based Upload Films Investments will see their Baton Rouge-made film “Drool,” among the special screenings at Slamdance, a simultaneous event focused on independent filmmakers. more
